Do you want to have a great powder day in Colorado? Try a day (or two) with Steamboat Powdercats. They’ve been taking people to the fresh for over twenty four years. This is one of the oldest cat skiing operations in the US and they know how to deliver the goods. Many of the guides are freeheelers so you will feel right at home.

The outfit has three plush snowcats in their fleet. This allows them to separate their guests by their intermediate, advanced, and expert ability. Powdercats operates out of Buffalo Pass in the Routt-Medicine Bow National Forest. This area is known for big dumps averaging over five hundred inches of champagne per year. While their 10,000 acres of terrain may not have the long steep runs of Alaska (but what does?) or super wide open bowls, it does have nicely and gnarly spaced tree runs that keep the powder fresh several days after a storm. The terrain is filled with a number of ridgelines with short, but sweet steep shots. The terrain consists of a variety of open and narrow glades, gentle slopes, and tree skiing to match everyone’s ability. For the expert freeheelers Soda Mountain and the Far East Drainage offers you tight trees, 5-25’ cliffs to huck, steeps, and stories to tell your buddies.

In the early morning a guide will pick you up in a van to take you to the powdercats office located near Steamboat Ski Resort. You will be greeted with energy and smiles by all the guides and staff including the master of chaos Kent Vertrees. His attitude and contagious smile will get you stoked. A continental breakfast of coffee, tea, hearty muffins  and fruit is available while you sign waivers and listen to some directions. You can also choose a pair of fat Salomon tele boards from their shop.

Snow Cats Cats With Powder Cabin

When arriving at Buffalo Pass you’ll receive your avalanche beacons(don’t bring your own) and backcountry safety instructions from the guides. The guides are true professionals who care about your safety as well as providing a most excellent experience .Now it is time to get on da cat!

After burning mucho calories in the morning you will make a pit stop at the “cabin” for a fully catered hearty lunch. The lunch will provide a little break and a chance to bond with your fellow skiers before you start your afternoon adventure.

During the day there will be a photographer recording your day. They will capture your image as you float through the billowy clouds of snow. At the end of the day you’ll be given a disk of these priceless images.

I have skied with Steamboat Powdercats on several occasions. The backcountry powder, terrain, the friendly and professional character of the guides and the great music in the cats has always been superb. When my friends were skiing groomers at the resorts in Summit County, Vail, Aspen, and even the Wasatch because it hadn’t snowed for days, I was skiing the pow with a big smile. So if you want to get out of the resort and ski some powder with just a few people check out Steamboat Powdercats. They are a first class operation!
